If this is happening right now

  • Stay calm and polite. Do not argue with officers — it rarely helps and is often recorded.
  • You may ask to speak to a lawyer. Say it clearly, and ask for the reason for the refusal.
  • Do not sign anything you do not fully understand — especially documents in Turkish. Ask for an interpreter.
  • Do not accept a “voluntary return” form just to end the wait — it can carry consequences.
  • Keep every document — passport, boarding pass, any paper they hand you. Photograph them if you can.
  • Contact us now by WhatsApp with your terminal and flight details — every hour counts.

What “denied entry” actually means

At passport control, an officer can refuse your admission to Türkiye — in airline and airport terms, you become an inadmissible passenger (INAD). You may be taken to a secondary inspection desk, asked to wait in a holding area in the international (airside) zone, and returned on the next available flight — usually with the airline that brought you. In some cases the refusal is also recorded as an entry ban (tahdit) that affects future travel.

A refusal is an administrative decision under the Law on Foreigners and International Protection (Law No. 6458, “YUKK”). It is frightening — but it is a process with rules, and with points where a lawyer can help.

Why you were refused

Officers don't always explain the reason in detail. In practice, refusals usually trace back to one of these:

  • Visa / e-Visa problemWrong visa type, expired, or conditions not met.
  • Passport issueToo close to expiry, damaged, or other document problems.
  • Previous overstayStaying beyond your permitted time on an earlier visit.
  • Entry ban (tahdit)A restriction already recorded against you.
  • Purpose of travelDoubts raised by funds, return ticket, accommodation or inconsistent answers.
  • Database alertA name match or record flagged at the border.
  • Prior removalA history of being removed or deported from Türkiye.

Your rights at the border

  • To be told, in general terms, the basis for the refusal.
  • To ask to speak to a lawyer.
  • To an interpreter if you do not understand Turkish.
  • Not to be forced to sign a statement you do not understand.
  • To contact your embassy or consulate in appropriate cases.
  • To humane treatment while you wait.

How these apply in practice depends on the facts and the officers involved — which is why early legal help matters.

Being refused or held right now?Don't sign anything before you speak to a lawyer.

What to do — and what not to do

Do

  • Stay calm and polite
  • Ask for the reason for the refusal
  • Ask for a lawyer and an interpreter
  • Keep every document you are given
  • Note officer names and times, if you safely can
  • Contact us early — the first hours matter most

Don’t

  • Argue, raise your voice or resist
  • Sign anything you do not understand
  • Sign a “voluntary return” without advice
  • Present false or altered documents
  • Throw away or hide any paper
  • Assume it's hopeless and just board the return flight

The process & timeline

  • Secondary inspectionYou are taken aside for questioning at a second desk.
  • DecisionThe officer decides to admit or refuse; a refusal is recorded.
  • HoldingIf refused, you wait in the airside holding area pending a return flight.
  • Return / next stepsYou may be returned on the next flight. Depending on the situation and timing, there may be steps to challenge the refusal or an associated ban.

Once you are returned, acting from abroad is harder and some steps are time-sensitive.

Common situations we see

A few situations we see often at IST and Sabiha Gökçen — yours may differ, but the approach is the same:

  • Refused on a tourist e-VisaTurned away despite an e-Visa — often over its conditions, your stated purpose, or a record on file.
  • Refused after a past overstayAn earlier overstay can lead to refusal and sometimes a ban; its length depends on the facts.
  • Held overnight before a return flightIf the next flight is hours away, you may wait airside. You can still ask to contact a lawyer.
  • Transit passenger stoppedEven in transit you can be questioned or refused onward entry. Send us your connection details quickly.
  • Already returned — want to come backWe can check whether a ban was recorded and, where there are grounds, work to challenge or lift it.

  • Tourists and visa / e-Visa holders refused at the border
  • Business travellers and event visitors
  • Students and residence-permit holders

At which airport — IST or Sabiha Gökçen?

We act at both Istanbul airports, around the clock:

  • Istanbul Airport (IST)The large hub on the European side; most international refusals and holding happen here.
  • Sabiha Gökçen (SAW)The airport on the Asian side — smaller, but the same rules and the same rights apply, and we cover it too.

Frequently asked questions

Can I appeal a denied entry in Türkiye?

There may be administrative or judicial steps available, depending on the decision and the reason. Some are strictly time-limited, so it is best to get advice immediately rather than after you have left the country.

What is an entry ban (tahdit)?

It is an administrative record that can restrict your entry to Türkiye for a period. The type and duration vary with the reason; some bans can be reviewed, reduced or lifted depending on the facts.

Will I be detained if I am refused entry?

Not always. Many people simply wait in the airside holding area and are returned on a later flight. In some situations administrative detention can apply. If you are being held, tell us at once.

Can a lawyer come to the airport?

Where the situation requires it and time allows, an attorney can attend IST or Sabiha Gökçen in person. We confirm whether that is appropriate on the first call.

I was deported from Istanbul Airport — can I come back?

It depends on whether a ban was recorded, its type and duration, and the facts of your case. In some cases a ban can be challenged or lifted; in others you must wait out the period. We assess this case by case.

Should I sign the documents they give me?

Do not sign anything you do not fully understand, and ask for an interpreter. Signing the wrong form — for example a “voluntary return” — can have consequences. Ask to speak to a lawyer first.

How long can they hold me at the airport?

It depends on the legal basis and the next available flight. Short waits are common; formal detention has its own rules. Contact us so we can act on the right footing.

Do you speak my language?

We assist in English and Turkish, and can arrange interpretation in other languages. Tell us what you are most comfortable in.

How much does it cost?

The first message to understand your situation carries no obligation. If you decide to engage us, we explain the fee clearly and agree it with you before any work begins.

Can you help if I am still abroad with a Turkish entry ban?

Often yes — checking for a ban and, where there are grounds, challenging or seeking to lift it can be done before you travel. We assess the prospects honestly first.
