Power of Attorney, Notary & Sworn Translation in Türkiye — Fast

Need an urgent power of attorney (vekaletname), notarised document or sworn translation in Türkiye — sometimes from abroad? A plain-English guide to how it works.

If you need an urgent power of attorney (vekaletname), a notarised document, or a sworn translation in Türkiye — sometimes while you are abroad — the good news is that much of this can be arranged quickly if you know exactly what your purpose requires. The trick is matching the right document and certification to the specific use, and starting before the deadline closes in.

This article is general information about Turkish procedure, not legal advice. Requirements change with the document and the purpose. Do not rely on it for your situation — speak with a lawyer.

What you might need

People usually need one or more of these before a flight, a property step, a court matter, or a business deadline:

  • A power of attorney (vekaletname) — authorising someone to act for you.
  • A notarised document — signed and certified before a notary.
  • A sworn translation — an official translation for use with authorities.
  • An apostille — international certification so a foreign document is accepted.

Which of these you need — and in what order — depends entirely on the purpose.

What is a power of attorney (vekaletname)?

A vekaletname is a document that authorises another person — often a lawyer — to act on your behalf in Türkiye, within the powers you grant. It is what makes it possible for things to move while you are elsewhere: signing, filing, attending, or representing you in a defined matter. The exact powers should match the task, no more and no less.

Doing it from abroad

You do not always have to be in Türkiye. In many cases a power of attorney can be executed at a Turkish consulate abroad, or through another accepted route, and then used to act for you here. What is possible depends on the document and the country you are in. Tell us where you are and what you need, and we will tell you the cleanest path.

Sworn translation vs. notarised translation

These are not the same. A sworn translation is produced by a translator recognised for official use; a notarised translation adds a notary's certification on top. Whether your purpose needs one, the other, or both depends on the authority that will receive it. Getting this wrong is a common cause of last-minute delays — so it is worth confirming before you commission anything.

What is an apostille — and do you need one?

An apostille is an international certification that lets a document issued in one country be accepted in another. Whether you need one depends on the destination country and the document. If your document will cross borders, ask about this early.

How fast can it be done?

Sometimes within a day — depending on the document, translation, and notary availability. But speed depends on having the right inputs ready: valid ID (your passport), any existing paperwork the document refers to, and names spelled exactly as in official records. We are honest up front about whether a tight deadline is realistic, rather than promising and disappointing. For how we handle this, see our urgent documents & notary page.

How can a lawyer help?

A lawyer can confirm exactly what your purpose requires, arrange the power of attorney (including from abroad where possible), coordinate sworn translation and notarisation, advise on any apostille, and get the finished document where it needs to go — against the clock. We tell you honestly what is achievable in your timeframe.

Frequently asked questions

Can I authorise a lawyer to act for me in Türkiye while I'm abroad?

In many cases yes, through a power of attorney (vekaletname) executed at a Turkish consulate or another accepted route. Tell us where you are and what you need.

Do I need a sworn translation or a notarised one?

It depends on the authority receiving the document. A sworn translation is for official use; a notarised translation adds a notary's certification. We tell you what your specific purpose needs.

What is an apostille, and do I need one?

An apostille is an international certification so a document issued in one country is accepted in another. Whether you need one depends on the destination country and document. We advise on this.

Can a document be notarised without me being there?

Some steps require you in person with ID; others can be handled by a representative once a power of attorney is in place. It depends on the document.

How fast can it be done?

Sometimes within a day, depending on the document, translation and notary availability. We are honest up front about whether your deadline is realistic.

What do I need to bring?

At minimum, valid ID (your passport) and any existing paperwork the document refers to, with names spelled as in official records. We tell you exactly what your document needs.

Urgent paperwork is stressful against a deadline — but with the right document matched to the right purpose, it usually moves fast.
